Purge Windows Update Cache - Windows 7 Failing to Update

  1. Open Command Prompt by Start -> type “cmd“; right-click and Run as Administrator
  2. On the Command Prompt, type “net stop wuauserv“. This is done so that you will terminate the windows automatic update service to allow you to delete the cache files
  3. Type “cd /d %windir%” This takes you to the Windows directory
  4. Type “rd /s SoftwareDistribution“ This command deletes the directory and all sub files and directories. Wait a few seconds… and the cache has been purged.
  5. Type “net start wuauserv“ This restarts the windows automatic update service.
  6. Close the Command window
  7. Reboot and try to run your updates again.
